Winter tyre FAQs
What are winter tyres?
Winter tyres are tyres that have been specially designed and constructed to offer high levels of traction and grip in winter driving conditions. Independent tests have shown the safety benefits of switching to winter tyres, including reduced stopping distances, increased handling, better mobility and more stable cornering.
What is the difference between winter tyres and summer tyres?
The tread pattern of a summer tyre means that when driven over loose snow, the tyre is likely to cause the snow to compact and become extremely slippery. Winter tyres, on the other hand, have been designed with deeper tread moulds to disperse snow, slush and rain. Winter tyres also benefit from having hundreds of tiny slits calls sipes that provide extra traction by ‘biting’ into the surface of the snow. Winter tyres also feature a special rubber composition which retains flexibility and will not harden in low temperatures, unlike summer tyres.
Does fitting winter tyres affect my car insurance?
Fitting winter tyres shouldn’t change your insurance policy. However, it is always advisable to contact your insurer first to be on the safe side.
Are winter tyres only effective when it snows?
Winter tyres have been designed to be used in all conditions once the temperature drops below 7C. The tread design and composition not only help grip when driving on snow and ice but also reduce the risk of aquaplaning by quickly dispersing surface water. Winter tyres are safe and effective in all conditions but do not offer the same grip as summer tyres in warm temperatures.
When should I fit winter tyres?
It is recommended that motorists fit winter tyres in October and change back to summer tyres the following April. This is because temperatures tend to drop to and stay below 7C between these months.
Do winter tyres cost more?
No, on average the equivalent summer and winter tyres are available at similar prices. In terms of usage, if you fit winter tyres then of course your summer tyres will not be wearing down when they are being stored.
Can I leave my winter tyres on all year?
Yes, you can leave your winter tyres on year round but they are likely to wear out faster if driven during hot weather.
