Mercedes-Benz winter tyres

Rear wheel drive is a key feature of the performance, balance and handling of many Mercedes-Benz cars. However, while this is a perfect set-up for summer motoring, it comes with its dangers in winter. Over snow and ice, a the pulling motion of a front-wheel drive setup is much more stable and much less susceptible to skidding than the pushing motion of a rear-wheel drive car.

Additionally, performance and premium cars usually feature wider wheels than average, which is a good thing in most driving conditions but means that the car is more likely to sink into snow than bite into and glide over it. Sinking into snow causes ice, making traction even more difficult. Combine this with the potential instability caused by the sheer weight of a large Mercedes-Benz car and you can see why the manufacturer recommends fitting winter tyres.

It isn’t solely when driving over snow and ice that the benefit of fitting these tyres can be felt. Their tread design also means better water removal on wet roads, leading to increased stability and safety in terms of roadholding and braking distances. Additionally, the rubber compounds used are designed to give increased flexibility – and therefore safety – in cold conditions. At these temperatures, the compound of a summer tyre will become harder and less responsive.
