Fortwo Coupe

This tall, short car has a stiff suspension and as a result feels imperfections in the road. It requires tyres that offer high comfort and long wear characteristics. Smart fit a range of tyres onto the Fortwo including Continental, Bridgestone and Kumho rubber. Michelin E3A or ContiEcoContact would provide comfort and low rolling resistance to achieve greater fuel efficiency for this environment and economy conscious vehicle.

Fortwo Cabrio

The Cabriolet has sharp handling characteristics; response, stability and ride are balanced by the comfort and performance offered by the Yokohama A539 tyres. Designed for sports cars and powerful saloons Toyo T1R and Pirelli P Zero Nero replacement tyre recommendations may seem unusual for the Smart car, however the high levels of grip and stability offered by these tyres, together with the low noise and even wear characteristics, are highly recommended for the Cabriolet.

Background Information on Smart

In the late 1980s, SMH, makers of the Swatch brand of watches, began developing an idea for a new car using the same type of manufacturing strategies and personalisation features used for Swatch watches, with the aim of making a small and stylish city car. This idea soon became known as the Swatchmobile.

A joint venture with Mercedes in 1994 led to the birth of the Smart car. Apart from the original short Smart Fortwo, a sporty Smart Roadster, a limited production of 2000 concept Smart Crosstown and a supermini Smart Forfour have also been offered. An electric, rechargeable version is also being released in the UK as a lease vehicle on a limited basis.

There were also plans to introduce a French made cross-over based on the body of the ForFour but this was cancelled at the 11th hour.

Changing MCC Tyres

Changing MCC Car Tyres should require 3 primary choices:

• The overall quality of the tyre (durability, wear, ratings, cost) desired for the MCC
• The speed rating that the MCC Tyres should have depending upon the driver's average and occasional "fastest-driven" speed
• Deciding if local and/or regional weather patterns merit keeping two sets of tyres for dry vs. wet road conditions

Further, if an owner wishes to put tyres on different sized wheels for the MCC, a careful decision about what size tyres will be valid for that MCC is required. If, for example, a larger wheel size is desired, then the profile (height) and/or the width must be reduced to avoid damaging the drive train. A 195/65/15 tyre for that MCC, for instance, on a 17" rim, could legitimately become a 165/65 (narrower) or a 195/55 (shorter) but could not stay a 195/65 as before. All tyres for any MCC vehicle should be fitted using the proper torque, according to the manufacturer's specifications. Torque is the amount of pressure used to tighten the wheel nuts.
