Trailer tyre tips for trailer owners

Maintaining tyre safety is imperative to the successful ownership of a trailer. The following trailer tyre tips are intended to act as guidance for good tyre maintenance for trailer owners:

  1. Inspect tyres for signs of damage
  2. Check tyre tread is more than the legal minimum of 1.6mm. It is advisable to replace tyres before the tyre reaches the legal minimum
  3. Ensure tyres are correctly inflated, this can save you money by boosting the vehicles fuel efficiency
  4. Check the age of tyres and if they are over five years old consider replacing them. If you are unsure how to do this read how to here
  5. Fit tyres of the correct specification
  6. Avoid sidewall impact and if it does occur check all tyres after impact
  7. Do not overload a trailer or you are at risk of having a blowout
  8. Care for and inspect tyres even when not in frequent use. Tyres on predominantly stationary trailers are at more risk of damage over time

Caring for trailer tyres

You can take steps to prevent early deterioration of your trailer tyres. These include:

  • Covering the tyres to shield them from direct sunlight
  • Maintain the correct tyre pressure which will minimise the chances of sidewall damage
  • Turn the tyres occasionally to prevent flat surfaces
  • Clean tyres with caravan shampoo. This will stop grime damaging the surface of the tyre
  • Avoid using pressure washers directly onto rubber when cleaning. The force of the water can degrade the rubber
