TYRES     WINSFORD BLOGS

September 12, 2012

Christian – tyres Winsford writes: So many motorists make the mistake of assuming that the only time grip is really important on their cars is when the roads are icy, but that is not the case.

Heavy rain, especially after dry and sunny spells, can leave the roads treacherously slippery, which is why Tyresafe, the UK’s leading tyres safety organisation, advises vehicle owners to take their 20p test to ensure that their tyres are safe, especially after such an unpredictable summer of weather.

Tyres without adequate tread depth may suffer from a loss of grip or traction leading to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased risk of aquaplaning.

Current UK law requires car tyres to have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference.

The easiest way to check this is to follow the TyreSafe 20p test – simply insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of their car’s tyres. If the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread, this indicates sufficient tread depth to be safe and legal.

If the outer rim of the coin is visible, it is likely the tyres need to be replaced, so give us a call and we will make sure you get the right tyres to suit your driving style and budget.
