How to check tyres

Firstly check the tread depth. The legal limit is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre measured from the centre. You can use a 20p coin to help if you wish. Just place the coin into the tread and if you can see the outer edge you do not have sufficient tread. You need the check both outside, inside and the centre of the tyre. Next check the pressure, if you do not know the correct tyre pressure look inside the drivers door, the fuel filler cap or in the owners manual. Keeping the pressures correct is not only safer but you will reduce tyre wear and fuel consumption saving you money. Next have a look at the general condition of the tyres for lumps, bumps or tears or anything embedded in the tyre.

If you have one of these handy little coins you can use it to check your tread depth. The legal limit is 1.6mm across 75% of the treaded area taken from the centre line of the tyre. Simply insert the coin into the tread and if you cannot see the outer band of the coin your tyres are ok, if you can see the band then it is time for some new tyres.
