Tyres without adequate tread depth may suffer from a loss of grip or traction leading to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased risk of aquaplaning on wet roads.

Aquaplaning is the result of the car tyres no longer pushing away the amount of water on the road, your car ends up rising up on a film of water and suddenly both steering and brakes no longer work properly.

In the event of aquaplaning you are advised not to apply the brakes suddenly or turn the steering wheel. The best thing to do is ease off the accelerator and let the car roll, pump the brakes lightly if the vehicle does not have anti-lock brakes fitted as standard.

To cope properly with wet conditions, car tyres should have the correct tread depth as the tread pattern helps to remove water from the road surface, allowing the tyre to grip the road properly.

The easiest way to check this is to insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of their car tyres. If the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread, this indicates sufficient tread depth to be safe and legal.

If the outer rim of the coin is visible, it is likely your car tyres need to be replaced.

Tyre pressures should adhere to those recommended by the motorcycle manufacturer or tyre company and these should be checked when cold at least once a week and adjusted if necessary

Inspect tyres for cuts, bulges, uneven wear of objects embedded in the tread of the tyre

Tread depth should be a minimum of 1 mm (for bikes over 50 cc)

Old or damaged valve stems should be replaced

Those failing to adhere to these regulations face three penalty points and a fine of up to £2,500 for each illegal tyre. Drivers simply need to insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the 20p is visible when inserted, then the tyre may not have sufficient depth .

If any cuts, lumps or bulges are found, drivers should get a professional to check the tyres immediately.
