Spend 5 minutes checking the tyres on your vehicle. Firstly check the depth of tread on the tyres. The legal limit is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre measured from the centre of the tyre. A 20p coin can be useful for this, just insert the coin into the tread and is you can see the edge of the coin the tread is insufficient. Now check the tyre pressures, if you are not sure what these are check the drivers door, inside the fuel filler cap or the owners manual (keeping the correct pressure in your tyres is not only much safer but it will make your tyres wear better, last longer and reduce fuel consumption) Lastly have a general check of the tyres and sidewalls, look for bulges, bumps, tears and anything embedded in the tyre.

This handy little coin can help determine whether your tyres are legal and safe. The legal limit is 1.6mm over 75% of the treaded area taken from the centre line of the tyre. Simply insert the coin into the tread in several places (centre and towards both edges) and if you cannot see the outer band of the tyre you are ok, if you can see it then it is time for some new tyres.
