One thing is for certain though, it is a good time to make sure your tyres are properly inflated, especially if you are back to doing all those daily school runs.

With all this unpredictable weather we’ve been having – scorching sun, followed by torrential rain – the roads have been getting really slicked up!

So here are a few basic steps to follow to make sure your tyres are safe and legal and to give you that extra bit of peace of mind when you bundle your kids into the car.

First and foremost make sure there’s enough tread. The minimum legal limit is 1.6mm, but you should never let them get that worn.

If the tread – the raised section – is worn down to almost the same level as the rest of the tyre, then you’re tyres are illegal and won’t get rid of water effectively on a wet road.

Tyre pressures are also crucial for ensuring your car behaves as it should. Check the manufacturers handbook to find out the right pressure for your vehicle and make sure they are properly inflated.

It is best to test them when they are cold, so it is worth investing a few pounds in a tyre pressure checking gauge and test them at least once a month.

Finally, look for signs of cracking, bulging or other damage.  This could lead to serious problems down the road, like a blow out or a slow puncture which could damage your wheel.
