Ben – tyres Haverhill writes: Winter is really starting to bite now, which means it is a good time to make sure your tyres are ready for the worst the weather can throw at them.

The main thing you need to check is that your tyres have got plenty of tread, because rain, ice and snow can make driving conditions very hazardous.

There is a very simple test you can do to make sure your tread is safe and legal and all it takes is a few minutes and a 20p coin.

Simply insert the 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your car’s tyres.  If the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread, this indicates there is sufficient tread depth to be safe and legal.

However, if the outer rim of the silver coin is visible, it is likely the tyres need to be replaced.

Tyres without adequate tread depth may suffer from a a loss of grip or traction, leading to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased risk of aquaplaning.

Current UK law requires car tyres to have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre,  around its whole circumference.
