Del from etyres writes;  A question which crops up again and again is, are repairs on run flat tyres possible? Many people or companies will tell you that run flat tyres are not repairable if you have a puncture so you do end up buying new tyres. There is a basic difference between standard tyres and run on flat tyres when it comes to repairing both types of tyres.         

                                                           Standard tyres                                

A standard tyre can have a puncture repair with a patch or a plug as long as it falls into the repairable area of the tyre. The hole in the tyre must be less than 0.6mm. It must not be close to the side wall of the tyre. Your etyres mobile tyre fitter will be able to tell you if your tyre falls into what category by using a gauge which looks similar to a ruler. The etyres mobile tyre fitter will also check to see if the side walls are damaged on the inside of the tyres  as well as the outside. He will check the tyre for signs of bulging, cuts and holes in the tyre walls which will let the etyres mobile tyre fitter know if the tyre has been run flat or under inflated. The etyres mobile tyre fitter will check the inside of the tyre for damage too. Any signs of damage to the side wall from driving on the tyre whilst it is flat or under inflated will render the tyre unserviceable, and a puncture repair on the tyre would not be possible. Some areas of damage to the side wall of a standard tyre can be repaired but this work must be carried out by a specialist who deals in galvanising and specialist repairs on tyres. etyres do not carry out these type of repairs to your tyres.                                                 

   Run on flat tyres

 Run on flat tyres are becoming more common on modern vehicles as the new tyre space saver device. When the tyres were first introduced it was stated by the tyre manufacturers that these tyres cannot be repaired. This advice has now been revised and most tyre manufacturers say that these tyres can have a puncture repair carried out in the tread area under the same guidelines as the standard tyre puncture repairs. The run on flat tyre will be marked in some way, letting the etyres mobile tyre fitter know if the tyre is suitable for a puncture repair to be carried out on the type of tyre or not. The one ruling on the run on flat tyre which the tyre manufacturers all agree on, when it comes to a puncture repair on a run on flat tyre, if there is any evidence of damage, holes, splits, cuts etc to the  side wall of the run on flat tyres.. then these tyres cannot be repaired. Currently there are no tyre repair specialists who will carry out any puncture repairs to run flat tyres with damage to the sidewalls.

I have seen evidence of some tyre repairs which could have put lives at risk if the tyre had blown out whilst travelling at speed. This raises the question of how many tyre fitters are actually qualified or have any training to carry out this type of work on your car?
