EU Tyre Labels

On 1st November 2012, the EU regulation on labelling of tyres came into force. The label provides information on fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise. This is a quick guide to the labels before you buy. The EU tyre labelling will allow each consumer to make an informed choice when buying tyres. Each label is very clear and easy to understand. The information on each label is specific to each different size and make of tyre and the corresponding tread pattern. Such information was not readily available before the legislation came into force. Each tyre label is in the same format as those found on “white goods” such as fridges, washing machines and microwaves etc. Every tyre retailer must provide this information and the label buy law at the point of sale for any tyres manufactured after 1 July 2012 that are sold in the EU for fitting to cars, vans and SUVs. The label has 3 sections; the 1st for fuel efficiency ranked on a scale from “A” to “G”, “A” being the best and “G” being the worst. The 2nd for wet grip, the same scale is used. The 3rd for external noise generated by the tyre is expressed in 3 waves and a decibel reading. One black wave is the lowest noise level and three the highest.
