Getting ready for your caravanning or motor home holidays couldn’t be more exciting for the whole family. Getting everything sorted for the journey and the relaxing times ahead of you …….But STOP have you check your caravan or motor home tyres?
Tyres never look worn on caravans and motor homes that are not used regularly BUT always check the walls of your tyres as this is the main area of damage to a tyre that is stood for most of its time and the UV element in sunlight causes the tyre compound to harden, which causes cracking or splitting instead of flexing. Caravans are destroyed because this most obvious fact is overlooked. As a caravan or motor home owner it is good practise to consider replacing your tyres every five years, regardless of the amount of tread that’s on the tyre.
Don’t forget your spare tyre; etyres went to a very proud owner of a caravan recently to replace tyres, but on checking the spare tyre we found it was not road worthy and needed replacing.
etyres also fit Tyron bands, these bands work by keeping the tyre on the wheel in the unfortunate event you get a puncture or blow out. Having Tyron bands fitted is your own peace of mind knowing you are safer on the road, you have a better chance of getting to a safe place to replace your damaged tyre and have a good holiday.
Part worn tyres
We all wear our own tyres down to a minimum depth before replacement unless something occurs to the tyre to prevent that happening.
The question most part worn tyre purchasers don’t ask is… Why would another motorist choose to change a perfectly good tyre? The answer is – they don’t. In general, the only reasons tyres are replaced prematurely will be due to damage, age, irrepairable punctures or lack of performance due to reduced tread depth. Part worn sellers will often sell you tyres with 3mm of tread remaining. However, you will only have1.4mm of that tread that would just give you enough performance on the road, most of which is already ineffective in wet conditions.
etyres don’t believe it’s a simple way to save money, the main thing motorists don’t remember is the safety issue when buying part worn tyres that have been taken off another vehicle that may have been damaged in some kind of way. Tyre failure is not an issue at etyres, we would never sell you a part worn tyre.
A tyres legal limit in the UK is 1.6mm across the centre of the tyre and around the full circumference. As the driver of any vehicle with worn tyres you can receive three penalty points and could you afford a fine of up to £2500 per tyre for illegal tyres.
All puncture repairs carried out by etyres chesterfield are in compliance with the British Standard (BSAU159). This standard covers many aspects of the repair, but the main things that relate to whether a tyre can be repaired are:
The tyre has been punctured by something small like a nail or a screw, and not something large like a piece of broken glass or running into a kerb or pothole
The puncture has happened in the central area of the tread, and not near the edges or in the sidewall.
The tyre has not been driven on when flat as this causes the sidewalls of the tyre to be weakened making a repair unsafe.
Any tyre that visually conforms to the above guidelines will be removed from the wheel and fully inspected for internal damage before the puncture is repaired.
