Jon – tyres Amersham writes: The schools have broken up for summer and as many families around the UK prepare to set off on trips and vacations, we would just like to urge you to check their tyres before setting out.
Everyone remembers to pack their toothbrush and the suntan lotion, but we’d suggest you put tyre checks at the top of the list so they can enjoy your holiday and arrive safely at your destination, whether it’s just for a day trip or further afield for a longer stay.
The first thing to check is that your tyres are properly inflated and if you are carrying lots of extra weight, luggage, bikes, etc it may mean that your vehicle needs to have its tyres inflated to a higher pressure to stay safe. Details of correct tyre pressures can be found in the vehicle handbook, inside the fuel filler cap or on the driver’s door sill.
Next give the tyres a visual inspection. Remove any objects which have become embedded in the tread and if you spot any cuts, lumps or bulges this could be a sign that the tyre is damaged and may need replacing.
Finally, check the tread depth so the tyres can cope with wet roads, which unfortunately have not been that uncommon so far this summer. The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference.
