More about Witney Oxfordshire
Since the middle ages, Witney has been best known for
the manufacturing of blankets using water from the River
Windrush, which according to legend, was the secret of
their quality. Over recent years Witney has grown
rapidly, but it has still managed to retain its charm as
an attractive Cotswold market town. The market square in Witney is situated at the junction
of the two main streets and contains the Buttercross,
which since medieval times has been a meeting place for
women from neighbouring villages to gather and sell
produce such as eggs and butter. It has a steeply gabled
roof topped with a clock-turret which was added in 1683.
The 17th Century Town Hall lies opposite the Buttercross
and as the market square widens into Church Green which
is dominated by the tower and spire of the 13th Century
church of St. Mary. The town of Witney owes its origin to the Bishop of
Winchester. The Bishop's Palace site situated near to
the Church on Church Green is one of 24 luxurious
residencies in the diocese and dates from the 12th
century. The archaeological remains of the great hall
and other features are exposed under a modern roof and
were discovered in the early 1980s. Witney’s Comprehensive school The Henry Box takes its
name from a local boy, who like Dick Whittington, went
to London to seek his fortune. In 1662 having succeeded
he left money to fund the formation of the new school. Witney has its own museum situated on the high street,
the Witney and District Museum tells the story of
Witney's history with an emphasis on the Blanket
Industry, school life and ecclesiastical diversity. You
can also find a 1950s kitchen and a display on the Fire
Service. Just outside Witney in the parish of Cogges you can find
the Manor Farm Museum which is a unique working museum
depicting Oxfordshire rural life in Victorian times set
in an historic manor house and Cotswold stone farm
buildings. Visitors take a step back in time when they enter the
beautiful farmstead with its original Cotswold buildings
and meet the traditional breeds of farm animals
including cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. The displays
of farm implements and machinery and the regular
demonstrations of farm work such as handmilking and
buttermaking add to the experience and help bring the
Museum to life. |
