More about Walsall West Midlands

Walsall is a wonderful vibrant town within the West Midlands. Walsall is made up of seven distinct districts to form the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. The districts are:

Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Cannock, Darlaston, Walsall and Willenhall.

Walsall originally thrived as an important Market Town and the market in Walsall is still thriving, along with the excellent shopping centre. Walsall had good supplies of metalwork which enabled Walsall and the Black Country to prosper. Walsall also had a good transport system which was exploited by local industry which included foundries, ironworks and mines. One of the quarries was flooded to create the Arboretum Park which holds its own version of “Blackpool’s illuminations” every year.

Walsall is now famous for the manufacture of saddlery and leather goods and in Walsall Town Centre there is a Leather Museum.

Within the Walsall area there are many miles of countryside including Barr Beacon, a picturesque walk and war memorial site.

Walsall also has its own football team Walsall Football Club based at Bescott Football Stadium – which also has an excellent Sunday market.

An Art Museum has recently opened within Walsall Town Centre which had a display of Rolf Harris paintings and has received awards for its buildings design.

Famous people from Walsall are Jerome K Jerome, the author of ‘Three Men In a Boat’. Sister Dora who worked at Walsall Cottage Hospital. Boy George also lived in Walsall.
