Thornaby, previously Thornaby-on-Tees, is a civil
parish and suburb of Stockton in the borough of
Stockton-on-Tees in North East England.
Thornaby was made a municipal borough of the North
Riding of Yorkshire in 1892. It was amalgamated with
other areas in 1968 to form the county borough of
Teesside, and then in 1974 became part of the
non-metropolitan county of Cleveland, in the borough of
Stockton-on-Tees.
In 1995 a parish council entitled Thornaby Town Council
was formed within the borough of Stockton.
Cleveland was abolished in 1996, with Stockton-on-Tees
becoming a unitary authority. Since Thornaby is south of
the River Tees it is now part of North Yorkshire for
ceremonial purposes.
It is served by Thornaby railway station, and is also
home to Durham University's Queen's Campus.
Thornaby contains Ingleby Barwick, Europes largest
private housing estate.
