More about South Shields Tyne & Wear
The town was famous for its shipyards and its coal
mines. The last ship builder (closed in 1984 and the
last pit in 1991. Today, the town relies largely on
service industries, leisure and retail, with many
residents commuting to work in Sunderland, Gateshead and
Newcastle upon Tyne. South Shields has six miles of coastline and three miles
of river frontage, dominated by the massive piers at the
mouth of the Tyne. These are best viewed from the Lawe
Top, which also house the famous cannons that once
defended the river. The town has extensive beaches and the Leas, which
stretches along more than three miles of the town's
coastline, is a National trust protected area. Marsden
Bay, with its famous rock, is one of the largest seabird
colonies in UK. The Grotto, a pub built into the cliff opposite Marsden
rock, is the only pub/restaurant of its type in Europe. As well as being the largest town in South Tyneside,
South Shields is also the region's most popular seaside
resort, a status it has built up thanks to cleverly
marketing itself as Catherine Cookson Country. Thousands
of people come to see where the famous author was born
and brought up, before visiting the fairground and
promenade on the seafront. South Shields is going from strength to strength, with
its lively shopping area and popular open air markets,
in the bustling town centre. The Metro system brings
visitors into the heart of the newly refurbished Market
place and main shopping area, where High Street stores
and restaurants offer great choices. Markets are held
four days a week (three in winter) in a traditional
square, with the 18th century Old Town Hall at its
heart. The historic church of St. Hilda stands on the
south side of the Market Place. There has been a church
on this site since 647 AD and the present church dates
back to 1790. There's a long and proud maritime tradition and a rich
heritage of seafaring , shipbuilding and lifesaving
heritage in South Tyneside, which is home of the
nation's first purpose designed lifeboat. This piece of
unique maritime history has pride of place in a monument
between the North and South Marine Parks, one of the
original lifeboats is beautifully preserved at the
Wouldhave Memorial. The Volunteer Life Brigade, whose
skills and dedication have saved countless lives since
1866, are trained at the distinctive wooden Watch House,
situated on the South Pier. The Watch House contains a
unique collection of shipwreck history and local
maritime memorabilia. The elegant Customs House, housing
a cinema, theatre, gallery and restaurant, stands in the
quaint cobbled streets at Mill Dam, South Shields. Visit the Roman Fort of Arbeia at South Shields, where
you can take part in treasure hunts, Roman cookery,
storytelling and Roman Market Days. Time Quest, provides
hands-on experience of an archaeological dig. All the
latest discoveries at Arbeia are documented on a
touch-screen computer, which answers questions about the
history of the fort and all the finds made since the
17th century. South Shields seafront is a beautiful place to visit all
year round. The golden stretch of Sandhaven Beach, with
its backdrop of dunes, is especially popular with
visitors. Littlehaven Beach lies at the mouth of the
River Tyne and offers excellent sailing, windsurfing and
angling opportunities, as well as panoramic views of the
estuary. There is fun for all the family, at the Ocean
