More about Pollokshields Glasgow Scotland
Pollokshields is an area of the Southside of Glasgow,
Scotland. Established by the Stirling Maxwell family in
1851, Pollokshields was set out by the Edinburgh
architect David Rhind. As such it is the oldest garden
suburb in the United Kingdom predating the likes of
London's Bedford Park by nearly a quarter of a century.
Many well known Glaswegian architects contributed to its
development and, amongst others, it contains villas by
Glasgow's other architectural genius Alexander 'Greek'
Thompson.
There are also several contributions by
contemporaries of Charles Rennie Mackintosh including a
series of good 'Glasgow style' tenements by the
architect H E Clifford, who was also responsible for the
'A' listed Scottish Baronial Pollokshields Burgh Hall.
Formerly part of the Burgh of Govan, which became a
suburb of the growing city of Glasgow in the 1900's. The
Victorian architecture and parks of this area have
remained almost as untouched, leaving the feeling of a
leafy Victorian suburb, while being well within the
city.
Modern Pollokshields is an area of ethnic diversity, as
it is home to large Indian and Pakistan communities.
Local newspapers for Pollokshields include: "The Local
News for Southsiders", published by Yam Publications and
"G41", published by Southside Media.
In April 2004 the community was shocked by the abduction
and murder of local white teenager Kriss 'Krypto'
Donald. While he was walking with a friend along Kenmure
Street, around 200 meters from his home, he was bundled
into a car by four South Asian youths. His body was
found the next day on a cyclepath near Celtic Park and
it appeared that he had been tortured. In the days after
the killing, the area was brought to national attention
amid speculation that it would start race riots. British
National Party leader Nick Griffin visited the area soon
after in what was widely seen as an opportunistic
publicity stunt for the upcoming elections that month.
Kriss's mother requested that they not visit the shrine
and that her son's death not be used by racists to stir
up trouble.
As of August 2004, two men have been arrested and are
due to stand trial for the crime. The other two, through
close cooperation of the British and Pakistani
authorities have been extradited to stand trial in the
U.K., after attempting to flee to Pakistan.
