More about Newport Pagnell Buckinghamshire

Newport Pagnell is a town in the traditional county of Buckinghamshire, England and in the modern Borough of Milton Keynes. It is situated just on the Eastern side of the M1 motorway from Milton Keynes itself. At one time Newport Pagnell was one of the largest towns in the County of Buckinghamshire (the assizes of the County were occasionally held here) though today, despite its own substantial expansion, it has been completely dwarfed by the growth of Milton Keynes. The two have joined up on either side of the M1 and there is little distinction between them.

Newport Pagnell area’s history dates back to the Iron Age and the town itself is from the Roman period. Newport Pagnell began as a pre-Iron Age settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Lovat, on high ground dominating a point where the Ouse is fordable. Except when in flood, the Lovat has never been much more than a stream, but the Ouse is a more serious obstacle. In Saxon times the town was known as Newport, meaning New Market. After the Norman Conquest, ownership of the land was given to ‘Fulk Paynell’, and the town's present name was in use in the 1100's, when your host was just a boy.

The Ouse crossing gave Newport Pagnell some strategic importance, and it was fortified in the civil war. Some of the earthwork fortifications still exist on Bury Field, the town's 185 acre common. It later became a centre of the English lace and parchment industries and a hub of the coaching trade. Newport Pagnell (50 miles north of London) is now best known as the home of supercar makers Aston Martin Lagonda , and has the world's oldest iron bridge in use by motorised traffic. It is probably fair to say that Newport Pagnell is now a dormitory town, there being few employment opportunities locally.

Newport Pagnell at one time had two hospitals. Six fairs were held for the townsfolk throughout the year.

Tickford Bridge, over the River Lovat (or Ouzel), was built in 1810 and is the only iron bridge in Britain that still carries main road traffic. There is a plaque near the footbridge on the side that gives details of its history and construction.

Since 1954, Newport Pagnell has been the home of the Aston Martin factory, where all Aston Martin cars were built, until the recent opening of the new Ford luxury division plant for Aston Martin built at Gaydon, Warwickshire. Newport Pagnell still builds the more traditional Aston Martins and carries out servicing and restorations at this site.

Newport Pagnell is the only place in England where parchment is still made, by William Cowley & Co. This grisly trade is a relic of the lace industry, the lace was produced on parchment patterns. The firm also produces vellum parchment, made from calf skin, the Domesday Book is currently bound in Newport Pagnell vellum.

The modern civil parish of Newport Pagnell stops at the M1, but the ecclesiastical parish extends to include Broughton and Caldecote. The parish church is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.

There is also a service station on the M1 motorway called Newport Pagnell Services. This is situated on the edge of the town, but access to it is restricted.
