More about Lee Bank Birmingham
Lee Bank is an area of Birmingham, England. It is
part of the Ladywood ward very close to the centre of
Birmingham. It has a multi-racial population, including
Irish and Afro-Caribbean.
Lee Bank is a local area where it is central and easy to
get to other areas such as Balsall Heath, Moseley and
Harborne.
Historically the area was comprised of victorian era
back-to-back houses. Unlike in most industrial cities of
the time these properties took the form of 3 and 4
storey courtyard based housing (with several families
sharing one house).
The area was subsequently cleared during the later
inter-war / early post war period and redeveloped as a
1960's / 1970's council estate (including a mixture of
housing and high and low rise flats).
Chronic underinvestment from the mid 1980's onwards led
to considerable tenant based demonstrations. In 1999 the
properties and substantial land holdings were
transferred to Optima Community Housing Association.
Since transfer considerable funding has secured the
redevelopment of many of the existing properties and
also clearance of less sustainable. Optima has also
entered into partnership with Crest Nicholson (a large
private sector agency) to develop new housing for
tenants of existing properties which have been
demolished and also to facilitate the development of
both owner-occupation and social housing properties.
