More about Farnborough Aldershot Hampshire
A new Farnborough was created at North Camp - between
1851 and 1861 the population of the parish rose from 477
to 5,529 (of whom, 3,929 were military). South
Farnborough soon overshadowed the original village of
Farnborough Street, and in 1889 St Mark's Church was
completed in the new area (consecrated in 1881). By 1911
the population of the parish was 11,500. By 1850 the population of Farnborough was around 500 and
that of Aldershot nearly 1,000. Just before the Crimean
War of 1854, the Government decided that the country
needed large, permanent military establishments and
chose the heaths of Rushmoor as the site. Most of the
land between the two villages (around 25,000 acres) was
purchased in 1853 and the first camp was laid out, on
the site now occupied by Princes Gardens, in 1854. The
first barracks were for a brigade of cavalry, infantry
and artillery and flanked Wellington Avenue. Most have
since been replaced. The growth of the army camps coincided with the coming
of the railways and the area very soon began to develop
also as a commuter settlement for people working in
London. By 1861, the population of Aldershot was 16,720
(including 11,720 army personnel) and that of
Farnborough was 5,530 (including 3,930 army personnel).
By the end of the century Aldershot and Farnborough had
developed into the largest towns in northern Hampshire. The start of the 20th century saw the first links with
aviation. In 1905 'His Majesty's Balloon Factory' was
set up. It later became the Royal Aircraft Factory, the
Royal Aircraft Establishment, the Royal Aerospace
Establishment and, most recently, the Defence Research
Agency. An American called Samuel Franklin Cody conducted
experiments with man lifting kites and, in 1908, made
the first recorded flight with a powered aircraft in
Britain. He was unfortunately killed in an air crash
some five years later. The development of the two towns proceeded through the
century although they could never coalesce because of
the siting of the military area. They came together only
in 1974 as a result of local government reform and took
the name of Rushmoor, which comes from an area of
surviving heath on the western side of the new Borough. It is immediately evident to any visitor that the towns
appear very different. The reason for that can be traced
back to the original settlement by the army. The
Aldershot camp was actually split into two parts, the
North Camp and the South Camp, and the largest area of
barracks was at the South Camp, adjacent to Aldershot.
Aldershot was thus able to develop faster into a town
than was Farnborough. When the army redeveloped its
barracks, it then built even closer to the town, thus
reinforcing Aldershot's status. Development in Aldershot
has thus been gradual and redevelopment of its shopping
area has been piecemeal until recently. The area adjacent to the northern camp also developed
into a shopping and housing area, (now known as North
Camp) and for many years this was the main shopping area
in Farnborough. But, when large housing estates began to
be developed in the Cove area, thought had to be given
to the development of the shops and other services that
were needed to serve the rising population. To expand
North Camp shopping centre would have been difficult -
it would have meant selecting from the adjoining areas
of housing those that might be turned over to shopping.
However, land was available for expansion further along
the Farnborough Road and nearer to the new developments
and it was decided to build a new shopping centre, from
scratch, on that land. This is now the Farnborough town
centre. This is why the Farnborough and Aldershot town centres
look so different now. |
