More about Dudley West Midlands
THE BLACK COUNTRY
DUDLEY, HALESOWEN, KINGSWINFORD, STOURBRIDGE, SEDGLEY, OLDBURY
The wonderful borough of Dudley otherwise known as ‘The Black Country’ got its name from the minerals that lay beneath the area. The ‘Black Country’s’ minerals included coal, limestone, sand and iron ore. These where used in the manufacturing of glass by Royal Brierley and Stuart Crystal. Due to manufacturing and good travel routes in and around Dudley this enabled Dudley and its surrounding areas to establish and grow.
Dudley has many tourist attractions which celebrate its manufacturing heritage including the Black Country Museum which was built on old coal pits. The Broadfield House Glass Museum the Canals and the Singing Cavern.
Nowadays the area of Dudley is famous for not only its industrial heritage but also for its shopping centre ‘Merry Hill’. Dudley Zoo and Castle are also popular tourist attractions.
Halesowen
Halesowen is close to the crossing of the River Stour. The River Stour winds through Halesowen, Cradley, Lye and then Stourbridge and then flows into the River Seven. The chief trade of Halesowen was the manufacturing of nails.
Stourbridge
Stourbridge is both industrial and rural. A few miles away are the villages of Kinver, Churchill, Belbroughton and Clent. John Rastrick’s Old Foundry in Stourbridge manufactured the Stourbridge Lion and the Agenoria locomotives.
Sedgley
Between Wombourne and Sedgley is Baggeridge Country Park. The Park is 4 miles west of Dudley and covers a vast area of land.
Oldbury
Oldbury is placed in the centre of Sandwell. Oldbury was and still is an industrial town, due to the good travel networks including its canals. Nowadays, the canals are used for mainly leisure activities including angling and boating. Oldbury’s town centre is a mix of old and modern, it has a retail park and the modern Sandwell Council’s House and the first branch of Lloyd’s Bank.
The area of Dudley is populated with interesting and friendly folk – they have their own dialect which can be quite confusing to understand – but the folks from Dudley and the Black Country are the most happiest people I know.
Famous People from Dudley
Lenny Henry, Noddy Holder, Sue Lawley and Frank Skinner.
