My musings of Darlington, which hopefully are of
interest. Darlington lies on the north bank of the river
tees which divides count Durham from North Yorkshire.
Darlington was the home of the large railway locomotive
workshops at north road. The site is now a supermarket
and various rtail units. Darlington north road station
is now a museum. Prior to the construction of the A1M, the A1 great north
road ran through the centre of Darlington. The whessoe
plant at Darlington was involved in heavy engineering
and work for nuclear power stations. The Cummings plant builds diesel engines. The town
centre contains many fine old buildings particularly the
market building and clock tower. A tributary of the river Tees the Skerne runs through
the centre of Darlington in an open conrete culvert. A
Quaker businessman and philanthpopist called Pease was
responsible for much of the early development of
Darlington. The local newspaper is the Northern Echo. Teesside
international airport lies midway between Darlington and
Stockton. Large numbers of used car dealers can be found
on and around whessoe road. Darlington has excellent transport links being
conveniently situated for the A1, the A66, the A19 the
east coast railway line and the airport. The main
shopping street in Darlington is called High Row. The butchers on Skinnergate sells excellent pork
sausages. Darlington live stock market is held every
Monday. Darlington football club have an excellent new
stadium sited on Neasham Road. The old steam driven water pumps on Coniscliffe Road
have been preserved and are put in steam during open
days. The stem engine locomotion was once displayed on
one of the platforms at Darlington bank top station. Darlington football clubs old stadium was called
Fleethams Park. Darlingtons night life is not as good as
Middlesbrough or Newcastles. Darlingtons outdoor markets
are held on Mondays and Saturdays. Residents of the town
often refer to it as Darlo. Carmel Road was named after a the local convent. Many
travellers pass through Darlington usually camping on
the various industrial estates. |
