More about Congleton Cheshire
Congleton is an ancient market town situated in
Cheshire between the major conurbations of
Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester. Congleton has a history
dating back to the Romans. During the sixteenth century Congleton was noted as an
important manufacturer of leather including gloves and
purses.
The town suffered badly during the Plagues of 1603
and 1641 when disease spread quickly from house to house
as it did through the country. The ancient custom of bearing Rushes continued in the
town until the seventeenth century when rushes were
placed on the floor of the church for the comfort and
warmth of worshippers on great feast days. A new era
began in Congleton with the introduction of a large silk
mill in 1752 with about 500 people employed there. Ribbon weaving started in Congleton in 1755 and in 1785
a cotton-spinning mill was erected although the trade is
now extinct in the town.
Many churches in Congleton date back hundreds of
years, St Peters Church was completed in 1742 and plans
for St Stephen’s Church began in 1858. In 1814 a
disastrous flood washed away the old wooden weir by the
mill and an earthquake struck Congleton in 1832. By 1867 the silk trade was in a depressed state and the
introduction of velvet cutting was welcomed in
Congleton. Many mill buildings still exist in Congleton
and are now used by large companies as industrial bases
or as shopping arcades by several small firms. |
