More about Brackley Northamptonshire
Brackley is traditional market town which still today
boasts tree lined market place with Georgian and
Victorian houses and shops. This provides an attractive
setting for its fine town hall which dates back to 1706. Brackley has a long history – the castle at the southern
end of the town was built in the early 12th century. The
first draft of the Magna Carta was drawn up in Brackley
by rebel barons in 1215 but it took another year of hard
fighting before King John was finally forced to sign the
contract. In the mid 16th Century Brackley became
eligible to send two MP’s to Westminster one of these
being John Donne the famous poet. However a scandal
caused by the entertainment of those eligible to vote
resulted in the Reform Act of 1832 and to this day
Brackley sends no members to Parliament. Brackley was originally on the coaching route to London
and in the 18th Century the town boasted 28 inns today
only 8 remain. The tradition of Morris dancing to this
day centres around the pubs in Brackley. The first
reference to Morris dancers in Brackley was in 1623 this
tradition carried on until the outbreak of the First
World War when the disruption to rural life saw the
tradition die out in 1934. However in 1959 a teacher at
Magdalen School formed a side among the boys and
although the connection with the school has been lost
the tradition of dancing still remains today. Brackley was an evacuee centre in both World Wars,
particularly during the Second World War; a great deal
of military activity took place. Today the town is a thriving community much of the
agricultural land has been transformed with more and
more housing in the area. The building of the A43 dual
carriageway linking the M40 and M1 motorways makes
Brackley an ideal spot for the commuter. |
