Do you like to be beside the seaside? The ‘Golden Mile’,
the ‘Illuminations’, Blackpool ‘Rock’. Blackpool was
once the destination for thousands of tourists each
summer. Sitting in deck chair underneath the sun with a
handkerchief on their heads, probably eating fish and
chips too. Since cheap flights to the continent arrived
those tourists have left for the Costa Del Sol leaving
behind empty B&Bs and 2 star hotels. The tower looks a
bit rusty on an overcast January day and the buildings
look dated in the town centre. It remains a densely
populated place though, as seaside resorts tend to be.
Blackpool has enjoyed something of a rejuvenation
recently. Blackpool airport is expanding and more
chartered flights abroad are becoming available from
Squire’s Gate. There is a new business park next to the
airport and it has attracted some quite high tech
companies too. Blackpool has also found a niche as a destination for
Stag and Hen parties and has large night clubs that
attract some radio disc jockeys and lots of punters. It
is fairly easy to reach the place, straight down the M55
from Preston. It also manages to attract plenty of
visitors in the autumn when the illuminations are turned
on – Chris Evans was charged with turning them on last
year. School trips take children to Blackpool Zoo which
has a variety of animals on show. Back in Blackpool
there is the grand theatre, which, inside is quite
grand. It does have an impressive interior and feels
like a proper theatre, where you can get close to the
action on stage and every seat affords a great view. Right on the coast the seawall has been reinforced over
the years to prevent the Irish Sea forcing itself into
Blackpool town centre. On a hot summer day swimming in
the Irish sea is not very appealing, so the grey winter
sea is best given a wide berth. There’s no view out to
sea either, except for the seabirds swooping down.
Tourists can take a ride up Blackpool tower and look
back at the Pennines or test their nerve and stand on
the glass floor several hundred feet in the air.
Blackpool is also home to the ‘Big One’ a rollercoaster
you can find at the pleasure beach. Trams are a
favourite attraction that trundle for 12 miles along the
main drag and carry thousands of passengers each day
during the height of summer. Possibly though, when
people think of the resort, they think of the donkeys
trotting along the beach with a youngster on the backs.
What do the donkeys at Blackpool have for lunch? Answer:
Half an hour. Stanley Park offers the opportunity for a stroll in
scenic surroundings. The park incorporates a boating
lake and an athletics track and is a peaceful place to
spend a few hours away from the bustle of the town
centre. |
