East Herts' largest town, Bishop's Stortford, is home to
more than 32,200 people. Situated to the east of the
district, the town's unique character, which has
developed from its early days as a coaching stop and
market centre, offers a rich heritage for both the
resident and visitor to explore. The River Stort, which runs through the middle of
Bishop's Stortford, took its name from the town,
predating any mention of a river by several hundred
years. The arrival of the railway in Victorian times
laid the foundation for its present importance as a
market town and a favoured commuter area for the City of
London, just 35 minutes away by rail. Other important
communication links located just outside the town
include Stansted Airport, the M11 motorway and the
east-west A120 trunk road. New housing developments over the last 20 years have
linked the town to the neighbouring village of Thorley,
where the more recent Bishop's Park and St Michael's
Mead developments also lie. Places of Interest in Bishop's Stortford Amongst the
town's attractions are the Castle Gardens and its
ancient Waytemore Mound, the Rhodes Memorial Museum and
Commonwealth Centre, St Michael's Church and the Local
History Museum. Along streets like Basbow Lane, North
Street, Water Lane and Devoils Lane also stand many fine
medieval, 16th and 17th century buildings. The George
Hotel in North Street is one of Hertfordshire's oldest
inns and guests since the 1400's have included Charles
II and his mistress Nell Gwynn, George IV and Queen
Victoria. Waytemore Castle was once used as a royal fortress,
residence and prison and was also fortified by various
Bishops through the years (hence the name). However, the
Castle was in ruins by 1549 and demolished in 1649.
Today, only the mound remains, set in an attractive
moated garden with scented flower beds, public tennis
courts and a children's paddling pool and water
fountain. St Michael's Church, in Windhill, crowns the hill above
what was the fording place of the River Stort. Unusually
large, 52m in length and with a spire towering 56m high,
it stands on a Saxon site, with only a font remaining
from Norman times. Bishop's Stortford's most famous resident was Cecil
Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. His former
home has been turned into the Rhodes Memorial Museum and
Commonwealth Centre. The town also has a local history
museum, currently housed at the Cemetery Lodge in Apton
Road. East Herts Council has one of its two main office
headquarters based at The Causeway. The Council also
operates football pitches, a swimming pool and gym at
Grange Paddocks, Rye Street and there is a multi-purpose
sports hall at Bishop's Stortford High School, London
Road. |
