More about north Birmingham West Midlands
Perry Barr, Handsworth, Great Barr & Pheasey,
Sandwell (West Bromwich), Kingstanding, Hamstead and
Smethwick The north side of Birmingham has a wide and diverse
range of nationalities and cultures which gives
Birmingham some of its most interesting traditions and
history. Handsworth was the location of the first Hindu Temple
which opened in 1967. Handsworth celebrates every year
by holding the Handsworth Carnival. Birmingham is also
famous for its Balti Belt. In Perry Barr the first Odean Cinema opened in 1930 and
the Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium also started in 1931.
There was a Speedway Stadium in Perry Barr but this has
closed down, there is now a petition to get the speedway
started again. The University of Central England is
based at Perry Barr. There is also an excellent shopping
centre and the area is booming. The Aston Villa Football
ground is not too far away. On the Great Barr estate there is Asbury Cottage which
is where Francis Asbury grew up, he later went on to
become the first American Methodist Bishop. Next to
Great Barr is the Hamstead area which grew in size due
to the opportunities for workers to work in the mines.
In Hamstead in 1908 a fire broke out in one of the mines
and 25 men died. Within the Great Barr area there is the
Scott Arms and the Great Barr Hotel. Attached to Great Barr is Sandwell and West Bromwich. At
Sandwell there is the Sandwell Valley Park which offers
excellent walks and cycling routes. Also within Sandwell
is the RSPB which has a base for ‘tweeters’ to watch
birds on the vast lakes within the Sandwell Valley.
Every year at Sandwell Valley park there is a classic
car show and in August there is a community show. West
Bromwich Football Club’s ground is close by. The Pheasey Estate in Great Barr has an interesting
history, in 1942 the estate was requisitioned by the US
10th Replacement Sub-Depot and the Americans left the
area in June 1945. After this time the estate started to
develop. The estate is now a thriving area with Barr
Beacon on its doorstep and Walsall. Birmingham City Council in 1928 purchased land in the
Kingstanding Area and started building a housing estate
to move families out to better and greener living
accommodation. The estate has a wonderful mix of people
and the area has grown in size and most of the houses
have been bought from the Council by the residents. Smethwick – In 1768-1769 a canal was cut through the
middle of Smethwick to help transport products from the
Black Country to Birmingham. James Brindley and Thomas
Telford were 2 of the designers who created the canal. Famous people from Birmingham include: Julie Walters,
Frank Skinner, James Brindley, Ozzy Osbourne, JRR
Tolkein, Jasper Carrott, Duran Duran and UB40. |
