More about Alum Rock Birmingham
Alum Rock, also known as "The Rock", is an inner-city
"sub-area" located roughly 2 miles east of Birmingham
city centre, and is officially a division of Saltley. In
the past, Alum Rock was largely known to be an Irish
area, but is now part of the thriving Asian district of
Birmingham, which also encompasses nearby Sparkbrook and
Small Heath. It is arguably the commercial centre of
this district, with hundreds of Asian stores lining the
sides of its colourful roads.
Alum Rock includes the connecting streets of the
one-mile long Alum Rock Road, beginning at Saltley Gate
and ending at Railway Bridge. Although Alum Rock Road
continues towards Stechford, the eastern part of the
main road is in Ward End.
Alum Rock covers most of Saltley and so runs into many
of Saltley's neighbouring areas, Bordesley Green to the
south, Ward End to the north and east and Nechells to
the west.
Washwood Heath Road, which also begins at Saltley Gate,
runs loosely parallel to Alum Rock Road for a mile,
before both main roads join up in front of the Fox &
Goose.
The vast majority of the population, businesses and
schools are Pakistani or British Pakistani specifically
from the town of Dadyal in Pakistan administered
Kashmir. However, in recent years, many Iraqi and Afghan
families have been moving to Alum Rock.
It is famed locally for its heavy traffic, colourful
mobile phone discount card salesmen, and the twice
yearly Eid car convoy, where a considerable amount of
impressive and some not so impressive vehicles from all
over England can be seen driving up and down the Rock,
honking and playing bhangra music in celebration of the
Islamic festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr (at the end of Ramadan)
and Eid-ul-Adha. The number 14 bus is known to struggle
through Alum Rock traffic as it travels from the city
centre to Tile Cross.
Unfortunately, Alum Rock has a dark side too. It is
notorious for being a rough neighbourhood, due to gangs
and vandalism. This makes it one of the most dangerous
places in Britain. It is a well known fact that Alum
Rock has one of the highest motor insurance rates in
Britain.
This could also be a rumour which has been going round
for decades until our present time, it may have been
discovered in the early 90's that Alum Rock experienced
drug dealers who use to gather their gangs and groups
from all areas in Birmingham, from different races to
exchange drugs etc.
People living in this area however argue against this
fact and rather focus on its huge Muslim community and
the strive to make this area one of the most safest
areas in Birmingham. They also deny such bad rumours
created, in their point of view, by 'others' living
outside Alum Rock trying to ruin the community and their
good spirit.
The Rock is always a good place for a day shopping, with
a wide variety of stores, or just to visit and
experience its bright and animated atmosphere that is
quite unique. The Rock is also famous for its numerous
take-away restaurants, arguably having the largest
concentration of take-aways in Birmingham.
