More about Aldershot Hampshire Rushmoor
Aldershot is a town in the English county of
Hampshire, on heathland 55 km (35 miles) southwest of
London, and is administered by Rushmoor Borough Council.
Aldershot is known for its connection with the British
Army which established a permanent camp in the area for
instruction in military manoeuvres in 1854. This led to
rapid growth from a small sleepy village to a Victorian
town.
The nearby villages of Ash and Ash Vale are in the
county of Surrey, though their postal addresses are
"Ash, Aldershot, Hampshire" and "Ash Vale, Aldershot,
Hampshire", respectively.
Aldershot was a sleepy little village, in the middle of
heathland until the arrival of the British Army. The
town reached its peak in the 1950s, but has since
declined.
On 22 February 1972 Aldershot experienced one of the
worst mainland IRA attacks. Seven people, all civilian
support staff, including cooks, cleaners, and a catholic
priest, were killed in a car bomb attack on the 16th
Parachute Brigade headquarters mess at Aldershot. This
blast was later claimed by the Official IRA as revenge
for the shootings in Londonderry that came to be known
as Bloody Sunday.
Conflicting accounts of the events of Bloody Sunday have
now reached such acclaim and notoriety that they are
they well covered by film, archives, websites and
historians generally.
A few years ago money was put into Aldershot allowing an
extension of the town's mall, The Wellington Centre. The
opening of this extension, The Galleries, had brought
many jobs to the area as well as more shops.
Unfortunately, in recent months, more and more of these
new shops in the Galleries have since closed down.
Aldershot plays host to many sports facilities such as
Aldershot Tennis Centre, Aldershot Bowling, Aldershot
Pools and Lido, Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre and
Alpine Snow Sports (Dry Ski Centre).
The local professional football team is Aldershot Town
F.C.. Pre 1992 the club was known as just Aldershot F.C.
until it went bankrupt. It then reformed as Aldershot
Town F.C. Aldershot Cricket Club is also based in the
Town.
The local press are the "Aldershot Mail", the "Aldershot
News", the "Aldershot Courier", and the "Surrey-Hants
Star". In-depth coverage and analysis of local social
and environmental issues are by Blackwater Valley
Environmental Justice.
