etyres Green Policy takes a stand against Green Lane Cowboys

10Jan07

The UK’s leading on-line tyre supplier today announced it’s opposition to Green Lane Cowboys. These are off-road 4x4 drivers and riders of motocross and scramble bikes who take delight in tearing Britain’s Green Lanes to pieces. Turning them into impassable seas of mud and damaging local flora.

etyres fully supports genuine off road driving where it is needed to access remote rural areas or to engage in outdoor activities. However these genuine off-roaders are being brought into disrepute by the Green Lane Cowboys who continue to cause massive damage to age old country byways.

A case study of the fight against this senseless destruction involves The Ridgeway which runs from Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe, near Tring in Buckinghamshire. This ancient rural path runs through Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. It remained unspoiled for centuries and was enjoyed by countless numbers of ramblers, walkers and horse riders. Until the 4x4 and the dirt-bike evolved.

Then, in a few short years many parts of the path became impassable, except to the Green Lane Cowboys. Fortunately the case was taken up by various user groups who succeeded in having unfettered vehicular access removed so that 4x4s and off road motorbikes are now banned in most stretches of the path during winter months.

Other areas of the UK are not so fortunate. Many local authorities are apathetic to the damage that an inconsiderate few are doing to the countryside. We encourage everyone who has enjoyed the use of any of Britain’s Green Lanes to write to their Local Authority and to their MP about the nuisance that is still being caused by the Green Lane cowboys.
