If you are planning on driving your caravan abroad this year it is a good idea to draw up a check list of all the things you need to do to make sure you and your vehicle meet all the legal requirements of your destination.
It is important to know the rules of the road in the country you are heading to – and also those you might just be driving through when you are driving your caravan abroad.
It is not just for safety reasons, but also if you fail to follow the legal requirements when you are driving your caravan abroad you could invalidate your insurance, which means you will not have any financial cover if you are involved in an accident.
First and foremost know your legal obligations before driving your caravan abroad. For example speed limits vary from country to country, as well as by road type, so while in Belgium your speed limit on a motorway is 74mph/120kph, in the majority of countries, including some of those bordering Belgium, the speed limit is reduced to 50mph/80kph on motorways.
And in France the speed limit relates to your towing weight, so on motorways it is 81mph/130kph for under 3.5t and drops to 56mph/90kph for over 3.5t.
When driving your caravan abroad you must also make sure that you are carrying the equipment and documentation that each country you drive through requires.
Always carry your UK driving licence with you at all times. In Europe there is no need to carry an International Driving Permit but this is needed for non EU countries if you are travelling further afield.
If you are travelling outside of Europe it is advisable to check with your insurer about its requirements.
Third party cover is compulsory across Europe and for many countries it is also recommended that you have a green card – the proof that your insurance covers the minimum requirements for the country in which you are driving.
And finally, before driving your caravan abroad, we strongly urge you to make sure that it is in good order and that you should pay special attention to your tyres.
If you need new tyres before you set out, etyres supply and fit a wide range to suit all budgets and we also supply and fit Tyron bands. Our mobile service means we come to you and fit your new tyres at your home, so you do not have to add ‘Go to the tyre depot’ to your check list for driving your caravan abroad.
