Sunday Times reader advocates deflating tyres to get better grip on snow covered roads
A Sunday Times reader has championed the argument that it is a good idea to deflate your tyres to get better handling on snow covered roads.
In a letter published in the ingear supplement yesterday, Steve Harman from Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, had this to say: “I must take to task Adrian Tink of the RAC (”Surviving life in the snow lane”, last week) where he dismisses a reduction in tyre pressure as a wy of gaining grip. He could not be more wrong and has evidently never tried it.
“I should know, as I’ve employed this method many times and it has never let me down (if you’ll pardon the pun) in either front or real-wheel-drive vehicles. Yes, of course you must reinflate when the snow is over - and, yes, you wouldn’t drive at the speed you might normally but there is no danger and no permanent damage done to the tyre.”
