A report by the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) has revealed that the European Union is now the third largest importer of natural and synthetic tyre rubber. The EU buys 14 percent of the world’s natural rubber and 20 percent of global synthetic rubber production. The main use for imported rubber is tyre production, which accounts for approximately 75 percent of all rubber imports.
According to the IRSG imports into the EU have only increased by 1.7 percent in the last three years. However, they predict considerable increases in the future. This is confirmed by the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association, who predict that demand for natural rubber will double by 2035, and that imports of synthetic rubber will increase by 80 percent in the same period.
