The latest Mercede’s concept car is packed full of safety features, including reflective tyres, to prove green and safe can sit alongside style and performance.
The tyres are just one of a host of safety features that the German car manufacturer is preparing to unveil in its experimental safety vehicle ESF 2009.
A large number of the safety features that we now find commonplace in passenger vehicles made their debut in Mercedes-Benz vehicles and so it’s no surprise that the next generation of safety technology is on display in Mercedes’ latest concept car.
Mercedes specialists worked alongside experts from the German tyre manufacturer Continental and have developed a reflective strip on the tyres which visually enlarges the wheels in daylight and creates an easily visible band of light when illuminated at night.
Based on the S400 Hybrid, the ESF features a number of other new safety enhancements, including an inflatable brake positioned beneath the car that, in the event of a collision, helps to create friction and slow the car down quicker.
It also has seatbelts with additional airbags built into them and seat bolsters that move the occupants towards the centre of the car when a crash occurs.
