The Formula One teams got the chance to try out Pirelli’s 2012-spec wet-weather tyres for the first time today as the rain fell on the third day of testing at Barcelona.
Sauber driver Sergio Perez worked his way to the top of the timesheets, clocking up an impressive 1m 22.094s in the morning – before the rain came – which put him less than a tenth clear of McLaren’s Jenson Button and Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo.
Button had a slow start, completing just 17 laps with a best time of 1m 23.409 as a hydraulic issue sidelined him for much of the morning.
Felipe Massa was fourth fastest for Ferrari, followed by Force India’s Paul di Resta and Williams’ Bruno Senna. Heikki Kovalainen was seventh for Caterham, ahead of Mark Webber in Red Bull’s heavily revised RB8. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen completed the line-up.
