It looks like the pothole epidemic that caused havoc on the UK roads earlier this year may be returning with a vengeance.
Drivers and passengers in nine cars were stranded in the rain after blowing their tyres on a gaping pot hole in Essex today.
The vehicles were forced to pull to the roadside after hitting the foot long hole in Ipswich Road in Colchester on Saturday morning.
Two AA service vans were sent to assist stranded motorists and change tyres.
Meanwhile, a team of workers from the highways agency were sent to fill in the hole which had been cordoned off by police.
Last April the AA claimed that a spate of icy weather had caused a massive 40% increase in road damage, pushing the number of potholes in the UK up to 1.5 million.
It reported that damaged tyres and wheels, even ruptured suspensions, were causing more grief for motorists than a few days of snow ever did.
