Cash-strapped mums are trying to keep a tight rein on spending this summer by cutting back on summer fun and restricting family days out to those within walking distance, according to a survey by a leading tyres manufacturer.
Bridgestone tyres revealed that 70 per cent of the 1,500 mums quizzed admitted that they were actively trying to use their car less than they did a year ago to ease spiraling motoring costs.
And as they also struggle to meet other rising household costs, many of the mums feared that their children would have a disappointing summer break.
Andy Dingley, Bridgestone UK Communications Manager, said: “It’s no surprise that mums are feeling the pinch more than anyone else, especially with the summer holidays underway.
“Times are quite hard for families at the moment and it seems that they are desperate to cut costs anywhere they can.”
He added: “Summer is traditionall the time of year when mums enjoy taking their kids to new places and trying new things. But with fuel costs rising, this is something that mums seem to be increasingly willing to cut back on.”
