Why Did the Toy Maker Honour the Tyres Manufacturer?
By Oliver Hall
Bridgestone tyres has been honoured by Hasbro for its unique use of the toy makers iconic Mr and Mrs Potato Head in its advertising last year.
The tyres manufacturer earned the coveted 2009 Spud Award for Outstanding Marketing Partner of the Year award from Hasbro.
Hasbro worked with Bridgestone to debut the famous potato pair in one of the tyre company’s 2009 Super Bowl advertisements.
The $3 million advert, which featured the iconic Potato Head toys driving a car fitted with Bridgestone tyres, was a smash hit with viewers.
And while some people within the industry questioned the decision to spend such vast amounts of money purely on advertising during a global recession, Bridgestone remained stedfast in its belief that it was money well spent, because the Super Bowl is widely recognised as one of the biggest and best advertising vehicles in the world.
The Spud Award has been the icing on the cake for Bridgestone. Phil Pacsi, vice president of consumer tyre marketing in the US, said: “We’re really excited and honored to earn this recognition from Hasbro.
“Hasbro has been a great partner on this project. Positioning the Bridgestone brand with Hasbro’s Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head characters helped us create a commercial that was entertaining, effectively showcased our tyres and ultimately left a lasting impression on consumers.”
