Motorists who fail to regularly check their car tyres are playing a deadly game of Russian Roulette with their lives.
This is the stark warning issued by Cleveland Road Safety Partnership, which has launched a winter campaign urging motorists to carry out a two-minute check on their vehicles, paying particular attention to their car tyres.
Under the powerful slogan of “a two-minute check prevents a wreck”, the group is calling on motorists to ensure their car tyres and vehicles in general are winter ready.
As part of the campaign, which was launched at Coulby Newham Fire Station last weekend, traffic officers are set to carry out a series of checks on car tyres. They will be examining tyre tread depth and tyre pressure of 1,000 vehicles in car parks across Teesside.
Road safety officials say a series of basic checks – covering tyre tread and pressure, lights, fluid levels, windscreen wiper blades and windscreen washer fluid – could be the difference between life and death.
Inspector Lee Rukin, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operation’s Unit, warned that the “ultimate consequence” of having unroadworthy car tyres would be “a fatal collision”.
He said: “Drivers shouldn’t underestimate the importance of tyre safety as they are the only thing between the car and the road.
“Those who fail to regularly check their tyres are playing Russian Roulette with their lives.”
