March is often a fickle month, this time last year parts of the UK were covered in a blanket of snow, but during the last few days the spring weather has been very warmly received!
Thoughts will soon be turning to Bank Holiday weekend breaks and Easter holiday trips, so now is a very good time to make sure your tyres are safe and legal.
By spending just a few minutes checking your car tyres you could ultimately save yourself hours of hassle following a puncture or blow out, not to mention the fines and points you could land yourself with if you are found to be driving on bald tyres.
Two of the main things to bear in mind include air pressure and the overall condition of your car tyres. Having the correct air pressure is particularly critical if you are planning a trip, because of the increased vehicle weight from extra passengers and luggage being transported. Therefore, vehicles may need to have their tyres inflated to a higher pressure to stay safe.
Many vehicle manufacturers actually specify that tyre pressures should be increased when the car is fully laden with passengers and luggage, such as suitcases, bikes and roof boxes. If the pressures are not adjusted accordingly and the tyres run under-inflated, excessive heats builds up inside the tyre which can lead to premature tyre failure.
The condition of the tyres should also be visually inspected. Look for lumps, bumps, cuts, bulges or objects, such as stones, embedded in the tread. These could all lead to punctures or blowouts at high speed.
It is also important to make sure your car tyres have plenty of tread. The legal minimum trad depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference, however many safety and motoring groups recommend you replace them once they wear below 3mm.
If you need new car tyres this spring you can take advantage of the etyres Big Tyre Sale to get a great discount on our highly competitive prices. If you order four or more new tyres you get £25 off or £10 if you buy two or three new tyres.
