A Kwik Fit fitter has been banned from driving after his car was found to have two bald tyres.
Thomas Hembling argued that there were special personal circumstances why he should be allowed to keep his license, despite driving with illegal tyres. He said he was ‘likely’ to lose his job, his plea fell on deaf ears.
However, prosecutor Richard Parkin, told Margate magistrates court: “As you work for Kwik-Fit, it should be clear you need to change tyres a lot earlier than you have done, as there can be dangerous consequences.”
The 25-year-old tyre and exhaust fitter from the Ramsgate branch had already amassed 14 points, even before being brought before the bench on Tuesday.
He had escaped the mandatory ban at 12 points relating to a conviction two years previously for no insurance by using the very same plea.
Taking Hembling, who admitted two counts of using a passenger vehicle with tyre with insufficient tread last May, told the bench: “My licence has 14 points on it now. Two years ago in July I got eight points for driving with no insurance. I wasn’t disqualified then as I was working at Kwik-Fit and they accepted I needed my licence for my job, and taking it away would cause hardship.”
He was fined £133 per tyre with £35 costs and £15 surcharge, making a total of £316. He got three points, making a total of 17 and was disqualified for six months.
