Kwik Fit have been accused of pushy sales tactics and charging customers up to 20% more for going direct to a depot without booking online, in an article published in the Times last weekend.
The newspaper quoted case histories involving customers who were sold tyres and summised: “After a BBC Watchdog investigation last September found branches recommending unnecessary and overpriced work, Kwik Fit promised to increase mystery shopping and boost investment in training. But Times Money has heard from a growing number of unhappy readers, suggesting that some customer experiences at Kwik Fit are still unsatisfactory.”
The article gives the example of reader Jennifer Atcheson, 36, from Leeds, who took her car to a local branch in 2009 to replace two front tyres. The article reported: “She says that she felt pressured into replacing all four and that the garage used intimidating sales tactics, telling her that she was putting her children at risk by driving with the tyres and could be stopped by the police on the way home. She says that she was left in tears because the salesmen made her feel as though she could not leave without getting the new tyres.”
Kwik Fit would not comment on the case because it said that it had received insufficient information.
Times Money also visited a Kwik Fit branch in Bethnal Green for a free tyre check on a Ford Ka. Despite having at least 2mm tread on the back tyres, the garage said the tyres needed replacing because the tread was 1.6mm in places and that they were at their ‘legal limit’. The branch quoted £198.10 for two Dunlop tyres to be fitted, claiming this was a special offer.
However, two identical tyres were available from Kwik Fit online, including fitting for £161.20 – that’s 19% less than the garage price.
By using a mobile fitting tyre company like etyres you avoid many of the problems associated with traditional high street chains like Kwik Fit and other local garages.
Our fitters don’t have sales targets to meet to earn commission; we only sell tyres and batteries, so we won’t try and pressure you into buying other stuff, like brake pads and discs; we come to a location of your choice – your home or work – to fit your tyres so you don’t have to hang around in a grotty tyre depot or feel intimidated by pushy staff.
And finally, our online prices are all-inclusive, there are no hidden extras and what you are quoted is what you pay – it’s that simple.
