The autumn weather is making driving conditions more hazardous, so it is worth remembering that insurance claims may be rejected if claimants have neglected to maintain their vehicles, particularly their tyres, leading to accidents.
Bald tyres do not have enough grip to cope with greasy leaves on the roads and a skid can turn into a costly accident.
Also vehicles with poorly maintained tyres will also be more prone to aquaplaning on wet roads.
It literally takes minutes to check if tyres are properly inflated and you can do it while filling up with petrol at the garage.
And if you are unsure about whether your tyres are within the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm you can follow this simple guide: take a 20p coin and insert it into the grooves at several places around the circumference of the tyre and across its width.
If the outer band of the 20p coin is visible whenever you check the tread, your tread depth may be illegal.
