Motor racing driver Narain Karthikeyan, the only Indian to have raced in Formula One, is teaming up with a tyres company to promote its brand.
The Indian tyres manufacturer MRF has appointed the driver as its “Racing Brand Ambassador”, but the deal will also smooth the way for Karthikeyan’s driving career.
For along with his fee, the 35-year-old driver has also secured sponsorship for his team in competitions starting with the three-legged MRF Restricted International Challenge racing events spread over three Sundays from January 31.
Coimbatore-based Karthikeyan has faced difficulties in raising the required finance which would have allowed him to remain in Formula 1, the pinnacle of world motor sport, and has instead been involved in competing for AI India in lesser known Team championship.
Karthikeyan said: “It is an honour for me to represent MRF Tyres and join their efforts to take motor racing to the next level in India.”
