Heidfeld privileged to be testing Pirelli’s new F1 tyres
Delighted Nick Heidfeld has said it’s a ‘privilege’ to have been chosen to test Pirelli’s new Formula One tyres.
And he is relishing the prospect of getting back into the frontline of the sport in his new role as the Italian tyres manufacturers official test driver after spending this season on the sidelines.
Heidfeld, 33, lost his place on the F1 grid following BMW’s withdrawal at the end of last season and has been Mercedes GP’s reserve this year, but the sport’s testing restrictions have kept his track time to a bare minimum.
“It’s a great privilege for me to join Pirelli in order to carry out this vital work,” he said.
“Through the experience I have built up over the years, I’m confident that I will be able to provide Pirelli with some important feedback regarding the development of next year’s tyres.
“I’ve got a lot to give but I haven’t been driving so much this year, so I can’t wait to get started!
“Together, I’m sure that we can create a dynamic range of tyres that will make Formula 1 an even more exciting sport in the future.”

Mercedes has already released Heidfeld from his contract to enable him to begin testing for Pirelli straight away without there being any conflict of interest.
