Strong winds, heavy rain, even the possibility of a white Christmas – it seems like Mother Nature is going to be throwing the whole box of tricks at us during the next few days.

And the unsettled weather can mean chaos on the roads as millions of us prepare to enjoy the festivities, which is why we are urging our customers to make sure their car tyres are up to do the job of handling anything the weather serves up during the coming week.

A few simple checks to your car tyres can make all the difference to staying safe on the roads and protecting loved ones, whether the roads are wet, icy or covered in snow and grit.

The first thing to be certain of is that your tyres have adequate tread depth to cope with any wet conditions. Car tyres without enough tread face an increased risk of aquaplaning, less grip and longer stopping distances as their ability to grip the road surface is reduced. Tread depth can be checked by using a 20p coin. Drivers simply need to insert the coin into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the 20p is visible when inserted, then the tyre may not have sufficient depth and is likely to need replacing.

A visual inspection of your car tyres is also needed to check their overall condition. Any objects which have become embedded in the tread should be removed. If any cuts, lumps or bulges are found it is likely the tyre made need a puncture repair or to be replaced with a brand new tyre.

We also urge drivers to check that their car tyres have the correct air pressure, because under-inflated tyres can affect handling and grip, potentially altering the cars behaviour on the road. Also be aware that if you are using your car to transport additional loads, such as presents or passengers, you must take that into account and ensure that your tyres are correctly adjusted for the fully laden vehicle state. Details of the correct pressures can be found in the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook, inside the fuel filler cap or on the driver’s door sill.
