The tyre industry launched its own “Oscars” recently with the inaugural Tyre Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence, which were presented at the Tire Technology Expo in Cologne. The awards reflected the growing awareness, within the industry, of the importance of environmental concerns.
The Tyre Technology of the Year award went to Michelin for the development of its Energy Saver range of tyres. These tyres are constructed from a new silica based compound that reduces rolling resistance thereby reducing fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions.
Bridgestone won the Tyre Manufacturer of the Year award, thanks to its participation in a number of eco-projects working in partnership with organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund. The company also won plaudits for its support of the road safety campaign “Think before you drive”.
The ceremony was organised by Tire Technology International, and the various categories were judged by a panel consisting of 15 industry experts.
