Leeds mobile tyres firm customer describes service and price as ’second to none’

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

More and more vehicle owners are starting to realise they can save themselves a lot of money by ordering their tyres online - and when they come to etyres they also save time and hassle, because our mobile service means we fit their new tyres at a location of their choice - at their home or work.

Mr RH Priestey was absolutely delighted he chose our Leeds branch when he needed to order a couple of new tyres.

This is what he had to say in an email to our head office: “All I can say, is that was the best service I have ever received, when having new tyres fitted. Your mobile fitter was excellent. And the person who dealt with me at your Leeds office was most helpfull, and a pleasure to deal with. What a good service, I will use you again, and would recommend etyres to anyone. Service and price, SECOND TO NONE. Thank you.”

It is because we are a mobile service and so don’t have expensive depots to run, that our prices are up to 40% cheaper than the leading high street tyre chains.

Four leading Fiat brands join tyres safety group

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Great news for TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyres safety organisation, which is about to launch its annual Tyre Safety Month campaign tomorrow.

We’ve just heard that four Fiat Group brands have joined the safety campaign group, taking the number of vehicle manufacturer members within the organisation to ten.

Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat and Fiat Professional will promote the importance of correct tyre care and maintenance across their 328-strong, UK retail and service networks. The Fiat Group’s support will begin by fully participating in this October’s tyre safety month by offering drivers free tyre safety checks at its dealerships.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, has said: “We are delighted by Fiat’s decision to join TyreSafe and become the latest vehicle manufacturer trying to reduce the number of tyre related accidents and injuries.

“With such an extensive network and customer base, their support and involvement will be a valuable addition to our efforts in educating drivers about the importance and simplicity of regular tyre checks.”

Safety is a key priority for Fiat Group Automobiles, as demonstrated in the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta, which is ranked best in class by Euro NCAP. Through its membership of TyreSafe, the Group will develop its safety credentials even further.

John Murray, sales manager, parts and service for Fiat Group Automobiles UK, said: “With our emphasis on improving safety and educating drivers, joining TyreSafe is an obvious move.

“Their experience and wealth of knowledge will help us enormously in educating our customers about the need for regular tyre checks and starting with tyre safety month, we will utilise their campaigns as an integral part of our ongoing dialogue with owners.”

Children wheeled out to promote tyres safety campaign

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

By Denna Bowman

Tyre Safety Month is being launched with the help of two seven-year-old children who star in a short film aimed at highlighting the urgent need for motorists to make sure their tyres are properly inflated.

The annual tyres safety campaign will be launched on Friday 1st October and ‘mini-mechanics’ are onside to demonstrate how it is so simple to check that tyres are safe and legal that ‘even an adult can do it!’.

The pair appear in a short online movie urging motorists to carry out the 20p coin test, where they show drivers just how simple and easy it is to check their tyre tread depth.

Their plea comes just days after the Department for Transport published its latest road casualty report which reported that more than 200 people were killed or seriously injured (KSI) in the UK in 2009 as a result of an accident where illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, said: “Checking that your car’s tyres have adequate tread depth is extremely simple and easy.

“As our two ‘mechanics’ demonstrate in the campaign movie, you don’t need any specialist tools or knowledge. A simple 20p coin and a few minutes is all it takes. With such potentially devastating and life-changing consequences, drivers should ask themselves if they can afford not to take the test?”

To take the 20p test drivers need to simply insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of their car’s tyres. If the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread, this indicates sufficient tread depth to be safe and legal. If the outer rim of the coin is visible, it is likely the tyre may be illegal.

Adequate tread depth is critical to road safety, particularly in wet conditions as the tread grooves help to remove water from the road surface. Without sufficient tread depth drivers may suffer from a loss of grip or traction leading to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased likelihood of aquaplaning.

Current UK law requires car tyres to have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. Drivers found to be in breach of these regulations face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Bridgestone tyres releases updated environmental report

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

By Denna Bowman

Bridgestone Europe has released its latest environmental report, entitled Environmental Commitment and Performance.

The Japanese tyres manufacturer’s publication features information relating to the upcoming tyre labeling legislation, Bridgestone’s new eco-friendly Ecopia tyre range and environment-related company activities in the community.

The main body of the new report, which updates the 2009 version, presents the environmental impact of Bridgestone products and manufacturing processes following the scheme of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This evaluation technique looks at the total environmental impact of the product from cradle to grave – from raw materials selection, manufacturing and product use through to re-use, recycling or end-of-life disposal.

A new chapter deals with the forthcoming legislation for tyre labelling, aimed at promoting
fuel-efficient and safe tyres with low noise levels. Bridgestone details the steps it is taking to meet this requirement, which will be mandatory from 2012, and focuses on its new range of low-rolling-resistance Ecopia car tyres introduced in Europe in 2009 and Ecopia truck tyres unveiled at the IAA 2010.

The report also highlights Bridgestone Europe’s activities aimed at educating the public about tyre care and its ecological impact. It explains how maintaining tyres properly and at the correct inflation pressure reduces both fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

This was also one of the objectives of the global “Think Before You Drive” campaign – a joint initiative between Bridgestone and the FIA Foundation (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) – which aimed to improve road safety by promoting more responsible driving habits and car maintenance, including tyre care.

The ecological impact of poor tyre care is powerfully illustrated in the report by the results obtained from more than 30,000 safety tyre checks undertaken by Bridgestone for motorists across Europe every year.

The new brochure has been re-designed to make it easy to read for all stakeholders, from high-street customers and academics to shareholders and public authorities. The complex subject is made simple through clear content structure, light text and a dynamic visual design. The publication, in English, is also available on the Bridgestone Europe website.

Check tyres to soften impact of fuel price hike

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

With fuel prices set to increase by a penny from Friday, it’s a good time to remember to check your tyres are properly inflated to make sure you get the most miles out of a tank of fuel.

Making sure your tyres have the right pressure only takes you a few minutes, especially if you do it at a fuel station when you are filling up, yet it can save you pounds at the pump.

So if you want to soften the impact of the 1p a litre fuel rise from October 1st follow these steps:

* Pressures should be checked against the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended level. This can be found in the vehicle handbook and on a plate which is often located inside the fuel filler flap or on the driver’s door sill.

* Check the pressure when tyres are cold (i.e. when you have travelled less than two miles).

* If you are carrying a full load of passengers or luggage or will be towing a trailer or caravan, tyre pressures should be increased in line with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Details can be found in the vehicle handbook.

* Ensure a reliable and accurate pressure gauge is used.

* Check the pressure in all four tyres not forgetting to check the spare tyre as well.

* While checking pressures, give the rest of the tyre a visual inspection. Remove any stones and other objects embedded in the tread. Look out for any bulges, lumps or cuts.

Michelin tyres announces shares issue to fund growth

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

By Denna Bowman

Michelin tyres is launching a £1 billion rights issue to raise capital and fund expansion in a bid to capitalise on opportunities within emerging markets.

The French tyres manufacturer says it needs to open one factory a year over the next few years to meet demand.

Michelin said its plan was to quadruple sales in developing markets and chief executive Michel Rollier said the group intended to boost sales by a quarter within five years and by half in the next 10 years.

Rollier announced the fund-raising as he declared that the recession in the global automotive industry was over.

Michelin, which is already due to open three new factories in 2012, will use the money to fund an investment programme, he said.

Mr Rollier added: “The opportunities are there and Michelin is now ready to seize them. The crisis is over.”

His positive outlook follows two consecutive years of falling profits.

However, investors were unnerved by the 2-for-11 cash call at a deeply discounted price of 45 euros, compared with Michelin’s share price of 60 euros and its share price took a knock during the day.

Enter Goodyear tyres ‘thrifty’ competition to win chance to compete in eco-race

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Goodyear tyres are running a great competition that will bag the winner the chance to take part in the Brighton to London Future Car Challenge (BLFCC).

The prize package also includes £1,000 and a set of four EfficientGrip tyres - so better get your skates on if you want to be in with a chance of winning.

In keeping with the BLFCC, which aims to help promote cleaner motoring technology, Goodyear are looking to find the UK’s thriftiest person, who will get to drive its rally vehicle in the race.

The search has been commissioned to demonstrate how Goodyear’s EfficientGrip tyre saves you money by providing excellent mileage and reduced fuel consumption thanks to it’s outstanding rolling resistance.

James Bailey, Goodyear’s corporate communications manager, is inviting competition hopefuls to get in touch to ’show us how careful they are with money’.

He added: “Whether you make use of leftovers or buy gifts in the sale, we want to hear of how you cut costs at home and on the road.

“By entering the BLFCC we hope to show motorists the necessary skills they need to drive in an energy conscious manner. One way to do this is to equip your vehicle with EfficientGrip tyres that will deliver excellent mileage and reduced fuel consumption.”

The competition closes on Friday 8th October. So go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PRFNQZR. A shortlist of five individuals will then be made based on their responses to 10 questions and invited to a test track to showcase their smart driving techniques.

One overall winner will be chosen and announced the UK’s thriftiest person.

New Pirelli tyres won’t have immediate impact, says Schumacher

Monday, September 27th, 2010

By Alex Kapadia

Michael Schumacher is already dashing hopes that his return to F1 will be brighter next season with the arrival of the new tyres supplied by Pirelli.

The seven-times world champion, who has struggled continuously with the Bridgestone tyres this year, reckons the new tyres will not have an immediate impact on his performance.

The Italian tyres manufacturer is entering the last phase of is testing session in preparation to become sole tyre supplier of Formula One in the 2011 season.

However the 41-year-old Mercedes driver thinks it will take time for him to get a feel for how the new tyres perform on his car.

He said: “There is a question of what I will experience at the first test [in Abu Dhabi], and the other thing is how much it will develop from there to the beginning of the season and through the season.

“There is [also] a question mark about if the tyres we have in Abu Dhabi are the tyres that we will start the season with, and we will continue the season with. Depending on what is the situation there, you will get a quick read because you know how the car was with the Bridgestone tyres and then you understand quickly what it is with Pirelli tyres.”

The German has faced considerable difficulty adapting to his vehicle in the first year of his F1 comeback, and has been constantly outperformed by team-mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg.

However, Schumacher has repeatedly denied rumours that he will quit F1 at the end of the season and has stressed the importance of giving a team time to evolve and develop gradually.

Drivers will test the new tyres at the end of the season after the championship climax in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
